The Entry: Essie Lorene Peordue Russell was born July 23, 1929 to the late George Peordue and Willie Eva Brown Peordue Martin in Sunflower, Mississippi. She was the second child of three children.
Her Life: Essie was educated in the Carrollton, Mississippi school system before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana where she continued her education at the historic Crispus Attucks High School.
Essie was united in marriage to William Russell Jr. on April 27, 1948. Two children, Patricia Russell Morgan and William Russell III were born during this union which later ended in divorce.
Essie was employed by RCA/Thomson/GE. After 36 years of service she retired in 1991 to become a caregiver for her mother as well as others.
Essie was also known for her southern cuisine which was beloved by her family. Her tea cakes always resulted with a lot of confusion with Pat, Bill, Elva, and Carla trying to get the first batch and or hiding them from each other.
Anyone who came to the home where she and her mother lived received the best southern hospitality known to man.
Essie loved to garden and was known to have a beautiful vegetable and flower garden. The brightest in the neighborhood.
Her Commitment to GOD: Essie professed her belief in Christ at an early age while a member of Springhill C.M.E Church in Carrollton, Mississippi. After relocating to Indianapolis, Indiana she later became a member of Phillips Temple C.M.E. Church.
She was a faithful member of the H.M. Williamson Senior Choir and was devoted to Usher Board Number Two where she exemplified her hospitable qualities and spread warmth with her beautiful smile to everyone she saw. Her spiritual humility was undeniable, a servant who was always willing to go to extreme lengths to help others.
Her Loved Ones: Both parents, George Peordue and Willie Eva Martin, stepfather John Freeman Martin, sister, Georgia (Peordue) Martin and brother, John Wilford (Peordue) Martin, and sister-in-law Sarah Martin preceded her in death.
Her memory will forever be cherished by her children Patricia Russell (Michael) Morgan; William Russell III; nieces, Elva Martin-Phillips; Carla Martin-Lewis; stepchildren Donald (Shirley) Russell; Phyllis Russell (Billy) Toney; Wendy Russell Mayfield; grandson, Jukobie William Russell; great granddaughter Nya Symone Russell; 5 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; extended family and friends including her Phillips Temple C.M.E. family.
The Departure: Essie closed her eyes for her peace and eternal slumber with the Lord on May 19, 2020. God called Essie home to be at rest from her labor at the age of 90.
